We are a first world country like most first world countries that depend on everything from N-95 masks to antibiotics almost entirely on China, this is the result of globalism, a disaster that hopefully we will learn a lesson from. As for ventilators blame your hospital administrators for not spending the money on them or stocking PPE supplies , but hey have to pinch those pennies right? It is the same in Italy as it is in NYC, obviously there are exceptions like Germany who I heard has 5 times the ventilators per person as Italy. I worked at a large public health agency running the emergency management function, getting hospitals in the region to plan and be prepared was like pulling teeth it was always about money first, again look at your hospital administrators if you want someone to blame.
