Also, would the location be easy to defend? Is it on high ground? If attackers are located on nearby terrain that's higher than the walls of the shelter, you'll be exposed. Are there natural low points nearby from which attackers could seek cover and concealment? A nearby creek is great, but attackers could lay siege on your shelter and prevent you from accessing the water. So eventually you could dig a well inside the shelter. Or run a buried pipeline or hose down to the creek and attach it to a manual pump in the shelter. I might be getting a bit extreme here, but I just want to offer my two cents worth since you're going to be doing a lot of work on it.
