  1. A few days ago, California got hit by a winter storm in the high Sierra Mountains (not uncommon). The freeway was closed down at Donner Pass, which was named after the Donner Party, a very unlucky group of settlers back in the 1800's. In a bugout, a person could easily end up in a similar situation.
