Climate scientists have been sounding the alarm about the threat of climate change for decades. They are the only people qualified to assess the threat of climate change so I would listen to them. Unfortunately, most people have been fooled by the disinformation spread by the fossil fuel (coal, oil, gas) interests, such as Koch Industries, which are spending billions of dollars to discredit climate scientists and activists like Greta Thunberg. The fossil fuel liars know that many people, in their ignorance and naivete, will actually believe the lies in many cases. Just look at the comments.

J Politics Greta's parents were busy pursuing their demanding careers and were oblivious to the climate change debate. It was Greta who studied the evidence presented by the climate scientists, and educated her parents and two sisters on the subject. Greta changed the entire lifestyle of her family. They became environmentally-conscious and vegetarians. Her parents scaled back their careers and stopped travelling by air. Her father is now heavily involved with Greta's climate activist work. It's been Greta running the show from the beginning. People tend to judge Greta by her youth and unassuming demeanor, and therefore they vastly underestimate her integrity, intellect, and drive. She is a child in years only. In terms of maturity, I'd say she's 40 to 50. Greta has already addressed the United Nations COP24 Conference, the UK Parliament, the European Union Parliament, the French Parliament and French President Macron, and now she's in NYC where she will be addressing the United Nations Climate Conference. In addition, she has inspired a global climate action movement that's rapidly gaining momentum. I'm sure I missed some.

J Politics The data and empirical evidence presented by climate scientists are totally, and I mean totally, fact based. And Greta's message is based upon these facts. You not accepting her message as factual does not make it any less so. J Politics Okay, if I read you right, you view this trip as sort of publicity stunt, which I would definitely agree with, but the motive is important. This trip was not intended to advertise a product or to benefit a person or corporation in some way. It's motive was to publicize very dire, but factual scientific evidence, which most people don't want to hear. I completely support any such publicity stunt. Greta is trying to get politicians to act to mitigate an impending climate catastrophe. But, the politicians won't act until enough people wake up to the danger and start pushing for action. It's too late to avoid a catastrophe, but the longer we wait, the worse it will be.

J Politics Well, see the problem is that it will takes trillions of dollars over decades to effectively deal with climate change and only governments have that kind of money. And though the US government is well aware of the crisis, it won't act until a massive number of people (voters) wake up to the danger and push for action. Therefore, the very goal of the climate activists is to persuade people to join in. If you choose not to, then don't. However, without very urgent action, we will see mass migrations away from drought-stricken and flooded regions; famine on a biblical scale; mass extinctions of plants, insects, and animals; and conflicts over the world's remaining resources. All of these effects are well under way, but have not reached a catastrophic level yet.
