So what? Budweiser is the best selling beer and it tastes horrible. Sales numbers are only half the battle. The Corolla used to be good, it's not anymore but Toyota's customers are too stupid and blind to see that. Sure it's reliable but there are many other cosmetic, quality and performance flaws that need to be rectified.

Honestly their hatred for newer Toyotas is justified and I totally agree with it. It's not like Toyota can't crank out a quality built car with good reliability, the 90s variants of all Toyotas were very well made and had soft interiors. Now they're still reliable but dang the interiors are garbage and it sort of comes off as a "fuck you" to the customers who are very loyal to Toyota.
