Most of the newer German cars you see on the road today are leased because of the expensive long term maintenance. It's suckers like you that buy them after and think the insane repair bills are the price of admission to fun driving when that couldn't be further from the truth. Go to any MBZ dealership for example and you'll see 10 sales people working in new car sales/leasing and 2 in pre owned. Lease German for 39 months and buy Japanese for 10 years lol.

No doubt German cars are more solid. You feel it the second you go over a bump or shut the door, those cars feel like they're made of granite. In my experience however Japanese cars always gave the best of both worlds in terms of performance and long term reliability. My Uncle's 99TL is still going strong at 235k and feels tight. The only German cars I'd consider cheaper to maintain would be a MBZ C300 or BMW 328i. Other than that I'd lease them.

The jerky transmission wasn't designed that way on purpose to impart a sporty feel it's a syndrome with Honda/Acura auto transmissions and it's annoying. The ZF automatic in a Bimmer is seamless in it's shifting. The ATs in Acuras were a dealbreaker for me which is a shame because the rest of the car is fantastic but that jerky transmission will get annoying especially when there are far smoother units out there.
