I remember wanting one when the movie Ronin came out.
236
Country roads, fall foliage, quaint country style homes and a big honkin' diesel. This video is a treat.
235
The sound of the hood closing at 4:53 pretty much sums up how well built old Benzes were.
127
This BMW aged like a fine wine. Also that V12 can balance a coin.
76
Great review. The G30 5 Series is the perfect size and I love the subtle styling. It will age just as well as the old E39.
61
Big comfy, performance oriented SUV that you can row through your own gears. If that isn't heaven I don't know what is.
32
A 2018 vehicle with the same interior as one from 2006. It doesn't need screens everywhere or LED strips but when companies like Jaguar, who use to rely on keeping things as classic as possible, are moving forward it wouldn't kill Bentley to do so.
17
Man that exhaust note, powertrain whine and bouncy speedometer makes for such an experience.
13
I wouldn't say the fuel economy is that bad. There are cars that have little power but burn tons of fuel because their little motor has to work really hard to get things moving. The first gen BMW X5 3.0 and W211 Mercedes Benz E350 4 MATIC come to mind. Their smaller motors powering heavy vehicles and all 4 wheels make for terrible fuel economy. At least these higher powered vehicles pull great.
10
If it's a slow MT car then no problem. Love the sound of that I6.
9
Not just a BMW thing. Anything with a short first gear will be better off doing that.
9
Yeah a 1980s 560 SEL coupe is a stunner. Also, open and shut the doors on an 80s German car. They sound solid and heavy.
8
BMW styling since the bangle era hasn't been my favorite but the driving dynamics have always been amazing. My favorite all around car that I've driven is still a 2010 BMW 550i M Sport. Firm without being harsh, great handling, smooth powertrain, solid feel and comfy seats.
7
Bad wheel bearing? There's an odd sound.
5
It reminds me of a modern day Lamborghini Espada.
4
Like driving a library on wheels. Quiet, serene and the car, because it's on a W140 chassis, will feel rock solid.
4
Honda/Acuras are great all around vehicles.
4
It might be cool but if you can reverse park, back out of a spot, parallel park or have an idea of where your wheels and bumpers are you shouldn't be driving. My car has a backup camera and parking sensors. I have the park sensors turned off and I never use the backup camera.
4
I love how so many people bitch and complain about it not having a 3 person 3rd row. It's better to carry 6 people in comfort versus 7 and the last 3 are squished.
4
I use the touchless in the winter IF it's above the freezing point outside. I coat the car with Nu Finish prior to winter starting as it seems to stand up to the high pH levels in the soaps the car washes use. When summer rolls around I wash, decontaminate and seal the paint with Mothers for the shine.
4
I've always loved Range Rovers. They're the guilty pleasure of SUVs.
3
These M5s are definitely a pain to own sometimes but the second you floor the pedal and run them through the gears it's just so satisfying and you forget about the hassle.
3
I like the look of a W140, especially a final year Grand Edition, more but I like the way the W220 drives more than the W140. The W220 feels lighter on it's feet and the ABC equipped ones handle insanely good for a heavy vehicle. Also, later models (2004-2006) were good in terms of reliability. You had to stay on top of them but they were solid overall.
3
I love the contrast between big American landyachts and tiny efficient European cars. Such a cute little charming car.
2
Hey as a Canadian I don't blame you for preferring a Dunkin Donuts coffee. The thing about Tim Horton's is it's so damn inconsistent. You could go to the same Tim Horton's location on 5 separate occasions and it will taste 5 different ways and none of them good.
2
@ahmadahmal2942 The only 2 weak points were the engine harness (material would break down) and the AC evaporator. Both annoying things to replace but well documented.
2
Yeah funny enough a $20k Hyundai Elantra didn't squeak and rattle but a $100k BMW 7 Series had quite a bit of them.
2
@user59371 Just needs felt tape between the seats.
2
@TYPICALTRYHARD_ Right but the manufacturers force customers to pay for it as part of a package. I remember asking if I can get a car without a backup camera (nobody ever needs that) or if they can program out the backup camera when I shift into reverse. I was told no so now I had to pay for a feature I didn't even want. All I care for in a car is a good safety package, stereo and AC.
2
Such a beautifully styled V8 GT cruiser. It's a car you can drive and enjoy during long cruises.
2
@FirstHandLLC No it's built on a modded W140 chassis. They called it the W240 but most just said W140 because every MB fan would know right away.
2
Good to hear the transmission is smooth. So far the Ford/GM transmission has been a mess in terms of shift quality. Too bad you can't get the Allison in the 1500s.
2
Yeah they say the same thing for my car (16,000 kms or once a year) but I do it every 6 months which works out to about 7,000kms. Good peace of mind and a great selling point later on down the line. Even if I'm wasting money doing it every 6 months I'd rather waste some money than waste an engine.
2
It's called washing it and if you protect the paint there won't be an issue. A good underbody wash once the weather improves and it'll be fine.
2
Love the flat 6 sound as usual but quick question. Is it because the front ends are so light on 911s and the steering ratio being very quick is why the driver seems like he's very twitchy when turning?
2
My favorite thing about old Benzes is how the doors sound when you shut the door.
2
These Abarths and older supercharged Mini Coopers are super fun to drive. Not exactly reliable but just fix things before they break and enjoy.
1
These cars were quirky in terms of the reliability/dependability but with the right care there's no reason you couldn't drive one for 200k+ miles. Great size, styling and the S54 does sound legendary.
1
70s and 80s Benzes were just amazing. They were solid, safe, reliable (but keep up with maintenance and learn the car) and super comfortable. You couldn't mistake these cars for something else, they were distinctly a Mercedes Benz.
1
Now this is the car I'd do the Gumball 3000 in.
1
@vladpcgamer Yeah it just makes that solid "thunk" or "kerchunk".
1
If you buy a pristine example like this and keep it up you won't have many issues.
1
I feel like the EQ boost system, even though it's marketed towards the performance aspect of the vehicle, is more of a fuel efficiency thing not necessarily for the individual owner of the car but for MB to achieve fleet targets because of all the emissions and fuel economy crap going on with big Governments.
1
The M62 and S62 pull really smoothly. Great torque curve.
1
Funny how a Korean manufacturer does traditional luxury than the rest at present. Too many luxury cars that are trying to be sporty exist. Sometimes I just want to waft.
1
@f430ferrari5 BMW knew there were problems with the later models too otherwise they wouldn't issue a recall for those VIN ranges. They wouldn't waste money where it isn't necessary. It's just like the customer care program for the N63 V8 motors later on. People said it was no big deal yet they spent a crap ton of money tending to timing chains, oil sumps, injectors and CCV replacements. They did it for a reason.
1
He didn't say do this all the time. He meant do this until you get to the fun roads.

@Localtraveler2376 So what's the answer for when Teslas hit vehicles that are pulled over on the side of the highway? Plenty of emergency vehicles have been hit by Teslas with the FSD activated. Also, the tech does not take in to account moving over one lane (as required by law) when emergency vehicles are on the side of the road so again how are the roads a lot safer?
1
@Localtraveler2376 Actually the media is pro FSD so not sure where you're coming from with "stop believing what the media tells you" bit. This particular incident occurred in several states which resulted in drivers getting killed sometimes (that's concerning enough). Things need to change in how it's marketed to the public and laws surrounding it.
1
@Localtraveler2376 Look up the NHTSA investigation to crashes involving Teslas. Over 400 crashes occurred where Teslas crashed into emergency vehicles (Police, Fire, EMS) Of those 400 crashes there were 13 deaths. This led to Tesla recalling 2 million cars and revising the literature around autopilot and FSD. Even then the issue continues to happen.
