One time a Mercedes dealership screwed up a basic Service A on my friend's E350. The tech not only managed to overfill the motor with oil but also spilled a ton of oil all over the motor and naturally it dripped onto the exhaust manifold. As my friend was driving home the oil level too high light came on and as the motor warmed up it started to smoke everywhere and out the exhaust. Car got towed back to the dealership. The dealership did do over the oil change but told my friend he had to pay for the engine bay shampoo. After some arguing they finally agreed to shampoo the motor to get rid of the burning oil. The thing is the motor burned some of that excessive oil so it ended up fouling his spark plugs and messing up the cats and o2 sensors and on went a 6 month battle between my friend, his insurance, the dealer's insurance, lawyers and that dealership. Complete mess and to top it all off that Service A was $320.

Mistakes can happen. Illustrations on a service manual like Haynes or Mitchell can still be odd to interpret.
