Love the solid door closing sound at 1:01. Good old school MB build quality. Modern Benzes have good sounding door closings but they don't have the same heft. I know the safety is there but it would be nice to have that heavy thunk.

Wait so the camera with arms actually speaks now? Great!

Sounds nice. I always had a thing for these S5s. Just the perfect size and has a nice balance of luxury and sport.
41
Solidly built, comfortable, practical, design ages well and above all else very safe. Love how you gave the V8 a good run.

Mechanical beauty. You have to blame the consumers and the various Governments around the world for the fact that BMW will never make such a powertrain again. The Governments are so focused on the "environment" and fuel economy it has forced automakers to go to smaller displacement motors with turbochargers for more economy. Also, the consumers get brainwashed into thinking the previous motors were so bad that they actually support the stupid green movement and agree with that. I hope everyone who owns these V10 M5s/M6s preserve them as much as they can.

I've always loved the big body GM SUVs. I don't need one but it would certainly be a great guilty pleasure type of vehicle to own.
28
I like how it looks more like the versions Honda releases in Europe. It makes sense too considering cars like the Mazda 3 and the Hyundai Elantra look really upscale. Good solid vehicle and well priced in a world where car prices are going completely apeshit.
27
The British take on a muscle car. Just the right amount of V8 sound and the styling is beautiful. Nice old car driving experience.
24
Amazing SUV. I like the German offerings and even though they do the luxury aspect better the Jeep can pretty much keep up and costs a hell of a lot less to buy and maintain.
22
Pre-Chris Bangle era BMWs were amazing. The styling has aged well and the balance between sportiness yet being comfortable is just perfect here.
22
Love the versatility of the M5. It can easily be a city daily driver, great highway cruiser, a dragster, a drift machine in 2WD mode and with snow tires and the AWD mode it will plow through the snow. It also carries 4 people and their stuff in absolute comfort.

+wrinkleneckbass Yeah. They're smooth and idle silently. Good little motor.
13
I love seeing clean older vehicles. Much respect to owners who actually take care of their cars.
13
You're just too fat. Go take a look at a full size Chevrolet Suburban. Lots of cup holders for your big gulp too.
11
The good thing is clean ones go for around $7,000 or less if you want a bit of a project. Fun little car to drive and as always the I6 is really smooth.
11
That MB at 2:40 definitely has to have a black owner.
10
GameCaptain I have ways dealing with idiots who don't want to signal. I simply call the cops and saying the offending driver might be drunk and is driving all over the road. Cops respond quite quickly and it really inconveniences the day of the asshole driver. The cops will find some excuse to charge the offending driver and I go on my merry way.
10
Truly one of the best SUVs of all time. Just lease them so you don't have to deal with the insane repair bills.
10
While the current setup is very reliable an updated 8 speed auto wouldn't hurt. Gears 7 and 8 can be over drive gears for fuel economy while the lower gears can exploit the excellent torque this motor offers.
8
The 4 cylinder is the way to go for dependability. The only weak spot on these car are the front lower control arms which are a tad expensive to do but that's about it for weak spots.
8
CVT = Deal breaker.
8
Oof this fuel economy bullshit is going too far. They take a shitty sounding 4 banger and add 2 types of forced induction to it instead of one method or the other. That's going to complicate the hell out of everything and really the extra repairs in the long run will cost far more than the supposed benefit of all this fuel economy crap.
7
What's old school about the 3.0T motor? That's far better suited to a vehicle like this. I drove the 2018 Audi Q5 with this 2.0T and it's brilliant but the Q5 is far lighter and won't be carrying 7 people plus their baggage. Smaller FI motors are fine but there's a limit.
7
That transmission seems like a hazard. It's reluctance to down shift and the way it bogs down makes me think it won't respond quickly enough in merging or situations where I need acceleration.
7
+igeekone Shitty low rolling resistance tires. Good for fuel economy but horrid for anything else like traction and safety.
6
So you're worried more about what people think versus what's being offered by this car. By the time you're done optioning out a 335i BMW with features you see in this car it will cost far more initially and in the long run. The 335i is an amazing car and personally I'd take one but don't count the Acura TLX out.
6
+Han Chen Not a bad thing for a test drive though in real life. You can see how well the suspension handles the bumps and how solid the body feels.
6
Stupidest but funniest comment I've read in a long time lol.
5
The repair bills aren't bad just as long as you are proactive with your maintenance, do part replacements by yourself or by using an independent auto shop that works on German vehicles. With these diesels there are kits to delete all of the EGR, DPF and DEF systems to add reliability.
5
That Cruze driver would have been getting brake checked for sure.
5
Revs way too high on the highway. A regular 6 speed auto with 6th gear being the overdrive gear would have been a better choice.
5
What the heck are you talking about? This car has amazing performance and handling which is what any true M owner would want. The technology and design exists where it needs to be, not in the form of some stupid computer inside making a bunch of beeps one doesn't need. I love the subtlety of this car, I buy cars for how they drive not for how I want the public to perceive me.
4
What are you talking about? The only Mercedes that can possibly be linked with this car is the C43 AMG and find me even a used one that is the price of one of these new. Infiniti Q50, unless we're talking about the newest one with the 400HP 3.0T motor, will compete with this car but be more money too. Audi S4 same thing. Are those previously mentioned cars nicer? Absolutely but still a ton more money.
4
Really? BMWs newest motors are noisy as hell. The N20 clatters so much and the NVH is quite poor. The 4 banger diesel is even worse. The motor on the 335d was quiet though. Quietest I've heard so far is MBs newest 3.0 V6 Bluetec Diesels.
4
I feel bad for you given your lack of perspective. You can't seem to differentiate between an opinion and hate. How do you know the OP was intending to hate with just one comment? How does mentioning it's faster than his Porsche relate to his comment? He was commenting on the sound which to me as well sounds a tad underwhelming. Nothing was said about the style, power, feel or performance of the car so mentioning it's faster than his Porsche doesn't constitute a valid debate point. Rather, it sounds like some Honda fanboy forum argument.
4
Any BMW you need to ditch the RFTs. It's the biggest Achilles heel of any non M BMW. They have improved since the old RFT Bridgestone Turanzas but still they do better with a standard set of sport summer or winter tires depending on the season. If RFTs are as good as people say they are then why do no M cars have them?
4
Not an issue anymore these days. Old turbocharged motors from the 80s and 90s had to be treated that way.
3
The best part is that the 997s are becoming pretty affordable though I've noticed a bit of a spike in sports cars pricing since COVID 19 started. What I love about the NA Porsches is they live above 4k RPM.
3
Nice. A 3 row SUV that actually has space in the trunk when the rear seats are up and being used. I wonder at what speed does the transmission go into 9th or 10th gear.
3
It wouldn't be an Alfa if everything was working. What a beauty.
3
Yes. Same N55 motor.
3
Perhaps you shouldn't drive and watch videos at the same time.
3
+Alexis Solorzano That's auto that you see in the video. I think they only come with an 8AT.
2
+DeadofWinter321 No it's freakin annoying. Sounds like something out of an old Korean car. The BMW chime is the best.
2
Don't tell me this car also has that bullshit BMW fake sound piped in through the speakers. This car has a turbo 4.
2
***** You won't know that until they're a few years old. Based on consumer accounts on many forums they're still suffering from air suspension leaks, electrical problems and weird anomalies. The engine, transmission and driveline are solid though.
2
@swsschz Yeah the Cayman is tempting (especially the GTS variant) but the little extra space on the 997 helps.
2
The real highlight of this video is the cargo cover ;)
2
Better than a Tahoe/Suburban. Actual usable 3rd row and a more potent engine without all of the shortcomings of the L86 in the GM products. Dual injectors so no carbon buildup.
2
Has Subaru fixed the oil consumption issues? Also, why CVT and not just a regular Aisin 8 speed? I understand CVTs have gotten better and mimic the shifts of an automatic should one drive the vehicle a little harder but regular automatics last longer and just operate better in any driving situation.
