The biggest problem with Hawaii is that mainlanders (who happen to be mostly white) came to Hawaii and started building expensive homes and resorts and pushing out Native Hawaiians and even the Japanese migrants. House prices spiked, locals lost their homes and the only way to make ends meet is to now work for the people who pushed them out. Of course there will be animosity and it sure doesn't help when tourists come to Hawaii and treat the place like a trash can instead of respecting the people and the land.
