When referring to the partisans of the troubles, we said that unionists committed massacres like Bloody Sunday and on the other side was the Irish Republican Army. This isn't perfectly accurate. Bloody Sunday was itself perpetrated by British soldiers, not Unionist militias, but Unionist militias did commit other atrocities such as the Dublin and Monaghan bombings among others. The other side was hardly humane either, but it was not the IRA but the Provisional IRA, after a split within the organization. Sorry about those. 2. Some have complained about our characterization of unionists as colonists. To be clear, we didn't mean to do anything of the sort. Protestants did colonize Ireland, and many Unionists are themselves the Protestant descendants of those colonists. That's all we meant to say, and that's hardly anything but a fact of the matter.

  15. We were just working on a script for this story... sad stuff, but good video, though I think you missed one VERY important thing. Gangs in El Salvador operated mainly as protection rackets (as opposed to drug and human trafficking operations), meaning they controlled territory and extorted money for "protection" which really meant paying someone with the power to kill you, not to do that. This is important because Bukele's policies, while effective, have enabled the development of new protection racketeers: the police. So far, things aren't terrible. Police abuse is increasingly common, as they're empowered to detain or simply stop in the street and beat anyone they wish. However, as checks by the people are eroded, as peace sets in and people begin to want more than benevolent dictatorship, as Bukele's approval may eventually slide, the people will have no power to check the power of these new "protectors." I think your analysis of the tradeoffs and international criticism was good, but the potential for protection racketeering and powerlessness of the people hasn't gone away - it's merely changed hands.

See Imperial's latest video for an example of protest against former Nazi officials being involved in the West German government. People use the example of the USSR being harsher against Japanese and German officials as proof of the west's (America's) innate fascism, but you've hit on the head how it is far more complex than simply that. Everything I learned for AE came from skillshare (JakeInMotion's AE basics), various youtube tutorials, and imitating things I liked by other creators, eventually adapting them to my own style. Everything I learned for Blender came from the same (except I didn't use skillshare). Harry does the video and audio editing as well as the music selection etc. He's doing some animations in premiere now. Hope that helps. The barriers to learning some really great skills are very low. Harry and I had no experience with any of this before we started about 12 months ago.

  92. The book which served as the bulk of our research (linked in pinned comment if interested) discusses that as well. The authors have an interesting point which is that a big determining factor in the direction of a ruling party or autocrat is the signals it receives. There are two main varieties of signals - negative ones (which suggest the status quo is in trouble) and reassuring ones (which suggest reform would actually be productive). One very important type of signal is elections. They allow a ruling party, even if they are tightly regulated etc., to see how they're doing, how the people feel, how they'd fare post-transition. China lacks these. It's one reason Singapore, despite having a more competent ruling party and structure than China, is more likely to democratize successfully, sooner than China.   102. Wrong. Liberal democracy is a better form of government than whatever techno-fascism Thiel would prefer. His ideas aren't new but merely derivative of ideas tried by quite a few in the 20th century. They failed, because liberal democracy was better, and they'll fail again. We don't need to "remove franchise" to improve governance. In fact, quite the opposite. History provides bountiful testament that accountable government in the long run excels compared to unaccountable. Everyone who lives in a state "has a stake in state functioning." To argue that somehow some people do and others don't is to argue the famous line of Animal Farm, "Some are more equal than others," and that is an idea which has not historically found success to match the simple motto, "All men are created equal."

We wouldn't characterize ourselves as pro-KMT in any way, not least because, as you note, we mention that they were not ideologically disposed towards democracy until at least the 1990s. To say the least, we are ideological democrats, and we would be as opposed as anyone in the pan-Green camp to their actions in the 20th century or their pro-PRC turn in the 21st. There are certainly aspects of the story that we weren't able to hit for the sake of time but are nonetheless important—perhaps we'll revisit them in a future video.

  141. Fair points, but NPR's bias isn't explained by its funding model (whereas the BBC's recent problems, for example, can be). Instead, NPR's bias is probably more related to America's general education polarization, with more educated people in majors like journalism being disproportionately liberal, and then filling out the ranks of an institution like NPR. This is a much more complicated issue and a harder one to address. The key point is that, by all accounts, no real pressure is exerted (or feasibly could be) on NPR by the government, thanks to the CPB. Simultaneously, it's free from the pressures of advertising and corporate interests. This doesn't mean any media outfit that fits those criteria will be unbiased...only that it is a better formula for more reliable content than anything else. Edit: even Reuters has had run-ins with corruption on behalf of the British in their international bureaus, but Reuters is indeed a great outfit!
