I actually understand this. It’s like people who join the military or support a team because their family does. When you are raised in a social environment that glorifies and normalizes certain behaviors you are bound to also glorify and normalize those behaviors. The problem really is that large sectors of our society effectively live in societies of their own in conflict with the rest of us. It’s not even poverty or inequality the problem really is social ostracization and parallel cultures. I’m not sure about the solution though maybe housing and education reform to break up this social structures?

We’ve been trying it for 4-7 generations and still nothing. I think that without drastically changing the housing urban and educational structure we’ll never be able to break up the social bonds and isolation that creates organized criminal culture

I think he’s not very hopeful for that. He clearly thinks gangs are here to stay. Personally I think putting kids in different environments will help them choose different things then their older brothers until it no longer is the norm but you also need to change the places these people live in. As long as they are disconnected from our mainstream society they will always have parallel cultures
