The reason why the nationalists took control of the Ukraine is because of Russian deficiencies in soft power The reason for the invasion of Crimea was to prevent the loss of the strategic naval base in Sevastopol to NATO however what this did was removed a lot of the pro Russian voters & with the rebelling in Donetsk & Lugansk removing even more votes the chance of anyone who is Russia friendly winning the election was permanently harmed
