BUT ... his business was profitable — the manufacture of muzzle-loading rifles. He was doing well, and often had to shoot Native Americans and runaway slaves... so in 1852 he opened his own gun shop. So it is not surprising that little John was surrounded by all sorts of "iron" from early childhood, watched his father's work, helped him in some way, and then completely followed in his footsteps and already at the age of 13 assembled his first gun from the parts he had at hand, and which-I did it myself.
