Interestingly there was a European company constructing a railway in California, not sure if it was high speed or not, anyway, evidently they withdrew half way through the contract because they said that it was impossible to build things in the state due to bureaucracy and general state stupidity regarding the work.

The depth of feeling is understandable, however, note that if Britain had not sourced them then it is quite on the cards that some other country would have and in fact they might not even exist today if that country did not look after them. Witness the ransacking of Iraq and other countries by their own people with antiquities being stolen and sold to the highest bidder, where are they now? How about the destruction of the wonderful statues by militant Islam? If someone had taken them they would still exist today. Remember, Lord Elgin bought these pieces and took them to England during a time if hardship for tge Greeks who were taking their fine marble reliefs and turning them into lime to sell.

  6. Evidently the SO combines with water, H2O, to form H2SO3, which is sulphurous acid, which as you say eats alkaline marble.
