Have had an EA81 in the front of a microlight for 16 years, 356 hours, without any issues. Trust it 100%.

Have noticed that when 4 cylinder engine capacity starts to get much greater than 2.0 litres the reliability appears to decline, this in addition to them getting quite thirsty fuel wise. Not sure if it is the design of the in-line fours, the reciprocating mass at high revs or what, but they're never as good. Had an English Triumph 2000 6 cylinder car and it ran beautifully, was driven hard and never missed a beat, love that engine.

@iadr That's true, however in the case of the Volvo the over-engineering is incredible and Toyota is not exactly known for performance cars. Generally the larger displacement fours give more trouble, highly revved larger reciprocating mass engines have more problems in mass production, straight metallurgical issue.
