The reason Ian Smith failed and Rhodesia fell was because he trusted the word of the Americans who said they would support him, and then didn't. America as usual was only there for what they wanted, chrome etc, and when they were assured of that supply, they quite happily pulled the plug. Henry Kissinger was right for once in saying it is worse being friendly with America than being an enemy!
