His struggle comes from listening to rhetoric, and the inferiority complex instilled him as a young person. The folks that make Anti-gay laws and conversion therapy are the ones that are "militant,' and "pushing," people, and the fact that he sees that, and is still trying to flip it (because of rhetoric) is more than confusion or struggling, it's literally lying to yourself.
