A U.S. military stationed in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, was suspected of abducting and raping a local girl under the age of 16 in 2023. He was prosecuted in March 2024. The case was not exposed until recently.
The non-governmental organization "All Okinawa Conference" held a press conference on the 26th incident to criticize the excessive concentration of U.S. military facilities in Okinawa. Okinawan officials expressed anger to the commander of the U.S. military on June 27, demanding an apology to the victims and immediate and appropriate compensation.
The Naha City Council unanimously passed a protest resolution at a plenary meeting on the 27th, demanding that the United States take measures to prevent such problems from happening again. The resolution also pointed out that "there are endless vicious incidents caused by American military and civilian personnel."
It was reported on June 27 that the 25-year-old U.S. soldier involved in the case, Brennon Washington, was accused of abducting a girl under the age of 16 into a car in a park in Yomitan Village, Okinawa Prefecture during off-duty time on Christmas Eve on December 24, 2023. Chatting, then driving her back to her residence, and then raped her.
