  1. Oil of wintergreen is excellent to rejuvenate dried out and hardened rubber parts. A cup per gallon of water heated to near boiling and drop the rubber bits in for 10-30 minutes does the trick. Some parts will swell up but if you leave them sit overnight they return to the original size and shape and are almost as soft and resilient as new. It doesn't help if the rubber is cracked though as far as repairing the cracks.

  2. "...they used to sell this acidic stuff rust remover like gel." That would be Naval Jelly which is gelled phosphoric acid. It's still sold.
