It also helps that the B-52 doesn't get fatigued by putting lots of G's on the airframe. Fighters and other tactical aircraft that spend their service lives pulling G's get worn out faster, while there are still DC-3's from the 1930s flying today because nobody is yanking and banking in them.

There is a price to be paid for giving up conventional aircraft carriers. The Royal Navy would've been better able to project power with a carrier loaded with Phantoms and Buccaneers, or maybe even Grumman Intruders. The Harrier was and still is a capable aircraft, the US Marines still use them for the time being, but it's limited in fleet defense and bombing capacity.

@lewisw9905 When you go where the most bullets fly you take the most hits.

The A-10 is still popular because, well, look at it. It's totally badass. Outdated, but so is the Spitfire and we still love them too.

The last full-scale conflict against a peer enemy the US faced was a good 70 years ago. Since then, every war the US finds itself in needs something like an A-10. The minute the A-10 gets retired the Army will find itself wanting. Honestly, the A-1 Skyraider, as old and slow and out of date as it is, would've found good use in the last 2 decades had it remained in service.

@FeatheredDino And the P-47 was nicknamed the "Jug" because of its shape. The USAF (and its predecessor the USAAF) has a nasty habit of giving its aircraft names the troops don't like and ignore. B-52 Stratofortress is the BUFF, B-1B Lancer is the Bone, F-16 Fighting Falcon is the Viper, etc.

The meanest looking aircraft ever built, looks like its pissed off and spoiling for a fight just sitting still on the ground. I went to an air show at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey in the 80s with my brother. We got there late and had to park far away along the road, and walk up past the end of the runway, before making a right to get to the viewing stand. Turned out we were lucky. Air National Guard Phantoms were making mock bombing runs over the field for the show, and they were flying directly over our heads at treetop level, screaming like monsters, close enough to see the color of the crews' helmets. There is nothing like that sound, they are so huge and loud they shook the air around us, and as they passed they lit up their burners and there was a deep thump sound as they tore off into the sky. Like a flying freight locomotive hauling a train load of whoopass.

When the last B-21 is retired, its crew will be flown home on a B-52. (And when the last B-52 is retired, its crew will fly home on a DC-3 lol)
