  1. Mitchell was kind of a jackass. I never knew about the part where he endangered the lives of servicemen assessing bomb damage, that's unforgiveable in my book. I think if a modern US Army or Air Force pulled a stunt like that the Navy or Marine Corps leadership would go on a crusade to make sure he was held accountable. As for his ideas, well, in the early days of aerial warfare there were lots of theories out there about how air power would shape the future, some of which haunt us to this day, Giulio Douhet's strategic bombing theory being a huge example. The USAAF in WWII built entire campaigns around some version of Douhet's theory, and the USAF to this day still believes in it in a limited way, despite history showing us its limitations. Mitchell's half-sane theories on air power fit into this category in my mind.
