  1. Destroyer USS Laffey came within 20 feet of Japanese battleship Hiei, raking her with machinegun fire and everything else on deck, wounding Admiral Abe and killing some of his officers. She was then surrounded by enemy ships and went down soon after taking a 14" hit from Hiei, fighting to the death against four enemy ships at a point blank range.
