@seanp9277 Were they, though? Or were they just lucky in this case? And even if the carrier's radar wasn't pointing in that direction, wouldn't the radar from the escorts help cover the gap?

Moving story and video. My dad served on an Essex class that later got the angle deck upgrade in the 50s and served in the Fleet until the 1970s. Upgraded Essex could handle jets like the A-4 Skyhawk and the F-8 Crusader, but couldn't handle the heavier aircraft like the F-4 Phantom or the F-14 Tomcat. One Essex, the Lexington, served into the 90s as a training carrier.
