Serving on a ship always seems safer and more comfortable than serving as an infantryman, right up until the ship takes a catastrophic hit, catches fire, rolls over, and sinks into ice cold or shark-infested waters in pitch black darkness. Somewhere during that sequence, the thought of hiding in a foxhole from enemy rifle fire stops sounding like such a bad alternative.
