Funny thing is I am friends with a Canadian woman and when I told her one day that Elizabeth II was officially the queen of Canada she acted as if it were the first time she'd ever heard that.

  3. "Our connection to history is sometimes tenuous..." Something to think about. There is a lot of concern about digital photography because people are worried that format changes and technological advances could make many of the digital photos we take for granted today unreadable in the future. For example, will anyone be able to open a .jpeg file in 100 or 150 years from now? I have files on floppy disks from 20 years ago that I already can't read because my computer no longer has a floppy drive. Stuff like that. One advantage of older technologies like paper and negative film (not the nitrate kind) is that as long as you store them properly they will last a long time, and you can always convert them to whatever the current digital form is in the future. Some people prefer physical formats for archival purposes. I guess that makes sense, just don't let your library burn down before you make copies.

  8. I was in the Keys in the early 90s and there were a couple of old DC-3 airplanes painted bright yellow with the words "MOSQUITO CONTROL" painted in big letters under the wings. They would fly low overhead every morning, spraying the swamps, and their engines would shake our house. I don't know how well they worked on mosquitos, but it was very cool to see a DC-3 still earning its living and being well taken care of.

  13. Large quantities of swiftly moving water hurtling over a cliff is something that terrifies me at a primitive level. I love standing next to the top of a waterfall, but not too close. Under no circumstances would I have walked out over that dry riverbed knowing that somewhere upstream millions of tons of water was just waiting for its chance to rush back and sweep me away. It's kind of like that phenomenon before a tsunami hits where the water recedes from the shore. That part of your lizard brain that tells you, "Something ain't right here, RUN!"

  15. 5:00 Expecting the US Navy to retreat is usually a poor strategy; it is known as a very aggressive institution. I talked to a historian once about the attack on Pearl Harbor and he told me that the fact the Navy didn't know the attack was coming was probably a good thing, for had they been alerted the United States Navy would've sortied those battleships and gone out to fight the IJN carriers without any air support, and likely would've wound up with several battleships sunk in deep water instead of in the shallow water of the Harbor where they could be salvaged. The US Navy has a history of aggressive behavior going back to the War of 1812 or even earlier.

  17. Suggestion for a future video: The 1975 Corinthos disaster near Philadelphia. Two ships collided on the Delaware River resulting a tremendous explosion and fire which killed several sailors. Strangely forgotten today, it's hard to even find any info on it, but I remember it as a very young boy.

I was in an Irish bar once and the guitarist/singer stopped in the middle of his song as two woman came out of the ladies room, one of them helping the other, who was clearly smashed and had obviously been puking. After they walked out the door, the singer looked at the crowd and said, "Let that be a lesson to you, folks: If you're going to drink, you have to practice!" And thus he went back to singing and we went back to drinking.

  21.  @rabbi120348  I watched some of Tyson's fights. His signature move was a vicious uppercut to the jaw early in the fight, snapping the head back, immediately knocking out his opponent. Most boxers could take hits from him elsewhere, but that shot almost always took them out. So whatever plan they had was rendered moot as soon as Tyson landed that hit. Later, some guys got wise to that and refused to let Tyson get the opportunity, and that's when it was Tyson whose plan started falling apart. Even still, though, Tyson is a scary man, even as he ages.

Also an old joke is that that is the reason the Marines have it rough compared to others is that when the Air Force goes to build a base, they spend all the money on quarters and chow hall, then go back to Congress and ask for more money to finish the runways and hangars. The Marines do it backwards, spending the money on stuff for warfighting first, and then when they ask for money for a decent place to sleep, Congress says, "Fuck you. Live in tents."

  26. I remember how disappointed I was when I visited England from the US and found out that London Bridge is just a boring plane old modern concrete highway bridge. For a bridge that is so famous and embedded in children's songs and so on you'd think they'd have spent a little extra coin on some architecture and make it look cool.

  28. Robert Capa shot a bunch of photos on Omaha known as "The Magnificent Eleven". He said he shot well over a hundred photos but most were lost in a lab accident. Some have disputed that story, and his famous photo of a guy getting shot in the Spanish Civil War was also accused of being staged. But those 11 black and white photos are the real thing and they are quite moving. As for color footage, there was some color footage released back in the 90s, probably when Saving Private Ryan was out, and I saw some on the evening news. There was a shot looking down into a landing craft where wounded men were being treated and evacuated. There was blood and torn clothing but it was a very short clip. The news announcer said there was more and it was very graphic; that's all I remember.

  36. To be fair, before they knew it was carcinogenic, asbestos was pretty useful in fire retardants and probably saved a lot of lives without anyone even knowing it. Likewise, mercury is useful for lots of stuff but is unfortunately stupidly toxic. The real problem is when people find out a substance is dangerous and don't change how they use or handle it, like the guys who ran these radium clock factories.

We are seeing the logical outcome of allowing google to accumulate so much market share: they feel themselves to be so powerful as to be invincible and can now start imposing their own worldview on society and censoring people arbitrarily. The builders of youtube certainly made some cash when they sold out to google, but ultimately they sabotaged their own once brilliant platform. Google has taken youtube and cynically turned It into both a money-making machine and a laboratory for their own snowflake social experiments. Sadly, so long as youtube remains private property, you're only real way to fight back is to hope another video platform rises to challenge it. So far it hasn't happened yet.

I love your channel, History Guy, I find myself clicking on one after the other, and I especially love these ones about significant events that should be remember but have faded in memory for some reason. I have a suggestion for you: The collision, fire, and explosion of the Queeny and Corinthos on the Delaware River near Philadelphia on January 31st, 1975. I was very little at the time living nearby and I remember the explosion and then my dad watching the fire on the local news, it was a huge event, giant column of smoke, the river was on fire, and several sailors were killed, but the weird thing about it is that many people living in the area today, even those old enough to remember it, don't remember it or only dimly remember it. Funny how the internet makes it seem as if things that took place before we could upload video didn't really happen.

The idea that anybody participating in supporting the war effort is "in action" is as stupid and exaggerated as the modern notion that anyone in a uniform is a "hero" who deserves to be "thanked for their service". This sort of exaggeration does real heroes no favors, as anyone who has served knows there are more than a few shitbirds who are not heroes at all. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if the guy who touched off this explosion was a shitbird who was blowing off safety rules.
