Side note, a tone that sounds like it is continuously rising or falling but never goes out of audible range is known as a "Shepard Tone" and is commonly used for effect in horror movies or action films. I suppose that tones phasing in and out of each other can produce the illusion of a Shepard tone and that's it's a byproduct of these digital signals, but of course I'm just guessing and don't really know what I'm talking about.

There is a well-known "hidden message" (not hidden well at all) in the Rush instrumental "YYZ", where the opening riff is the morse code for the Toronto airport radio navigation beacon, YYZ, of course. Story is that guitarist Alex Lifeson has a pilot's license and was flying the band into Toronto, and had his comnav radio tuned to the beacon. Drummer Neil Peart thought the morse code was a cool rhythm, and since Toronto was the band's home town, they built a whole track around it.

  11. How do they change the bulb? Simple, disconnect all the cables, unbolt the tower from the pedestal, tip it over with a crane, unscrew the bulb, then reverse the process. Easy peasy. I should add that this only works on older towers. Newer towers, when the light burns out you just throw the tower away and buy a new one.

  17. I don't know how relevant this is, but maybe someday you could do a video or a series on the radio noises coming from Saturn and other celestial objects. NASA's Cassini probe sent back the creepiest signals I've ever heard, picked up by its sensors inside Saturn's magnetosphere. NASA slowed them down to audio rate and posted them on the web back in the 2000s and I made the mistake of listening to it in a dark room alone late at night. 1950s Forbidden Planet type sound effects. Also, at least one Apollo crew picked up weird signals on their radio while orbiting the Moon, thought to be a heterodyne whistle perhaps. A video about the radio systems used for Apollo comms might be cool, too.

One thing to remember is that in the US for about five years or so after the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks, anyone seen hanging around anywhere taking photographs was treated like some kind of potential terrorist. So whatever was going on at that site, it's no surprise these guys got chased away.

  20. Not really related to any of these radios, but when I was growing up I got a build-it-yourself radio kit from Radio Shack that received, among other things, air band. It wasn't fancy and it used one of those weird clear plastic earphones every Radio Shack kit came with, but for a 10 year old it was awesome. It was a blue plastic console with a smoked glass plastic dust cover that you could see the electronic innards through. I had no idea what I was listening to, but the fact that I built a working radio and was listening to jetliners was so cool. I really miss Radio Shack.

Interesting note about Theremin: he was a US resident and the KGB kidnapped him and forced him to go back to the USSR for many years. After the Cold War ended he returned to the US and reunited with his student, Clara Rockmore, considered the greatest Theremin player, before he died. There is a cool documentary about him out there.

  27. This reminds me of a 1986 movie called Riders of the Storm starring Dennis Hopper. It's a comedy about a bunch of psy op Vietnam vets who operated a station out of an old B-29 Superfortress in Vietnam, and after the war kept the aircraft and use it to broadcast pirate radio and TV in the 1980s. They decide their last mission is to prevent the election of a war-mongering woman. It's not the best movie ever made but it's very much of its time and the concept of a flying pirate broadcast operation is a fun one to contemplate. I remember my dad renting the VHS tape back in the day.

  31. Asking people not to be jerks on the internet is likely to be as effective as asking people not to look at pr0n or cute cat pictures. But you're not wrong. Where I live the cops went digital and possibly encrypted, and the fire department too, so my 125 is no longer usable for them, but I still have air, rail, and marine traffic at least. Public safety, in my opinion, shouldn't be encrypted. Some police activity needs to be, but the bulk of it, stuff like accidents and so on, should be in the clear for the public. One of my favorite photographers is a guy known as Weegee who, back in the 1940s, made his living by scanning New York City police radio in his car at night so he could drive to the crime scenes and get the photos. He was friendly with the police, and they never had a problem with him. I guess that sort of thing is old fashioned now.

  36. In the US AM is still pretty important, especially out in the country away from the cities. I hope it never dies. I love listening to AM at night on long drives, scanning for stations to see how far away I can pick them up. If the conditions are right, you can hear stations hundreds of miles away for a while. There has been recent conflict over car manufacturers trying to remove AM from car radios and it upset a lot of people, I think Ford actually reversed the decision. A lot of people still listen to it.

ESB won out and held the record for a good long time. The mast is, in fact, an airship mooring mast and there is an old airline terminal near the very top, which is now converted into a tourist area. It was always a gimmick, as it is impractical and reportedly illegal even in the 1920s to operate an aircraft like that, but they did try to dock an airship to it once. The airship captain approached a few times and aborted each attempt due to strong vertical wind gusts that made it scary dangerous to get anywhere near the building, and that was the end of that idea. But it shows up in fiction sometimes still, the movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow has a scene in which the fictional "Hindenburg III" is docked to the ESB in an alternate history timeline.

  54. It's the same story in other communication and navigation infrastructure as well. Shutting down radio nav aids leaves no redundancy in event of GPS system failure, and trying to shut down various radio bands leaves no redundancy for mass communication in event of Internet failure. Plus what you watch or listen to on the Internet can be monitored, unlike radio, and using GPS for navigation on devices connected to the Internet is also an easy way to track you. People increasingly don't own radios with multiple bands and also seem to have forgotten how to read a simple roadmap.

I have a 5-tube AM radio that I need to get repaired, worked fine until recently, probably a dead tube. I almost bought a 1920s radio set that was in superb condition, complete with vintage horn speaker, but the antique dealer moved on before I got back to her. I went to a museum near Baltimore once that had lots of military electronic equipment, including a bunch of radio and radar gear from WWII.

  67. My local NDB is the only thing I can hear on my radio's LW band, but it's cool to listen to. Back when I took flying lessons my instructor showed me how to tune the comnav radio in to NDB's and listen to the morse code over the headphones. From up in the air they come in pretty loud and clear. Also, he showed me that the radio would tune up into the MW band so you could listen to the local sports radio station while flying lol.

After 9/11 it is believed that terrorists were being flown into certain airfields by small business jets stopping on their way to or from Guantanamo Bay. I sometimes put my Eton radio on the local airport control tower frequency, set the off timer, turn the volume down a bit and drift off to sleep to it.   99. RM, suggestion for a video, though it's a long shot: when I was little we had toy Star Trek communicators, which were walkie talkies. They had the flip up lid on the front and came in a pair. They also had a base station unit that looked like a console panel on the Enterprise, presumably Lt. Uhura would use it. I think they were on a CB channel, don't remember which one, but we could hear truckers talk to each other on nearby highways. These things are rare today, but if you were to find a working example in your travels it'd be cool to see you do a run down.

I often think of things like the Voyager spacecraft which is far beyond the solar system out of human reach, but the electronics and comm system continue to function and will do so until the plutonium power source decays beyond its ability to produce enough electrical power. The Pioneer spacecraft are another example. On at least one of them the signal got so weak that NASA declared the mission over and stopped tracking the spacecraft, but it's still out there, still transmitting weakly, likely never to be seen by humans again.

  115. I visited the site a few years back. It's really remote. You lose cell service long before you get there. There are no nearby interstate highways, so you have to travel a fair distance down country roads through mountainous areas to get there. The visitor's center is pretty nice, and they give bus tours, in a diesel bus of course. When the tour guide said that digital cameras were prohibited inside the fence line, there was an audible sigh from the tourists, except me, since I brought my old film camera. On the way out it was dark, and I almost hit a deer like 3 or 4 times on the twisty mountain roads, so if I ever go back, I plan to leave when there's enough daylight to reach the interstate or a town.

  119. I have a few cheap SW receivers, and the best one is an older Grundig FR200 "emergency" radio. Analog tuner, hand crank (I normally just use AA batteries), a flashlight (you know, for emergencies!). It's kind of a cheap plastic radio and it's been discontinued for a few years now but honestly it works great. I sit outside with it and slowly tune around and pick up all kinds of distant signals. It's also possibly the best small AM transistor radio I have used as well. Only problem is no sideband capability.

  129. I grew up in range of KYW in Philadelphia, 1060 kHz AM. When I pass through the area I will still tune in to get news and weather, etc., and the station ID is kind of nostalgic. Back in the 70s and 80s they used to constantly broadcast the sound of a teletype machine in the background during news segments, so it always sounded like they were getting news fresh off the wire. It was a gimmick, but it was cool. I don't think they do that anymore, especially since no one knows what a teletype machine is these days. I'm also glad you mentioned TV stations. We don't think of them as "radio stations", but of course TV is just a fancy form of radio communication.

  150. Cool video. I knew rail fanning was a big thing but I never thought about chasing ships. Not too far from where I used to live there is a canal that connects the Delaware River to the Chesapeake Bay and there is frequent barge traffic there, and a bike path that runs alongside the canal. There is also a gigantic railroad lift bridge over it, which only closes for trains infrequently, but it's amazing to see up close when it does. Might be interesting to get a radio and check that out.

  160. Some years before the 9/11 attacks my cousin took me to the top of the WTC Twin Towers, all the way up to the observation deck on top. I remember looking across at that mast shown in this video at 0:20 and being surprised at how huge it was. Prior to that I had only seen it and these buildings from far away driving up the New Jersey side. I had assumed that mast was just a big light pole thing. What did I know? I was a teenager. When I got up top everything was so much bigger, that giant mast, the buildings themselves, even the deck I was standing on. Between the edge of the deck and the edge of the roof was a fairly long distance, and it was covered in razor wire to discourage anyone from hopping the railing and thrill-seeking or suiciding. All this time later still hard to believe all of that is gone.

Even with an external wire antenna, though, it doesn't seem to get great reception where I live, and since it doesn't come with any instructions I'm left to hunt around the internet for hints on the various features and controls. My best SW radio, though, is an old Grundig FR-200 that I bought years ago, probably at Radio Shack before they folded. It's an analog tuner so I never know exactly which frequency I'm on, but even with the built-in telescopic antenna I can pick up a lot of stations at the right time of day. I swear I heard that some morse code station the other night, around that same frequency.

  187. I think Technology Connections did a video on this a few years ago explaining why the sodium lamps were replaced. I have mixed feelings about them. I agree the modern LED lamps can be pretty harsh, but back in the 80s I remember thinking the sodium lamps were kind of a sickly yellow. The streetlamps where I grew up were a softer whitish light of some sort, bright enough for us to play street hockey under but not yellowish. I wish I knew what those were, but they were probably installed in the 60s or 70s.

Then there's the computer you're reading this on, which may have a camera that can be hacked, a hard drive which can be infected, and can be used to target you by thieves or nefarious government agencies. Smart devices create huge security gaps as well. Adding radar without fixing the security problem first only makes it worse.

  304. A phone-based method of communication certainly seems less secure than using a radio broadcast, anyone who dials a number is risking detection. Even if you use a pay phone the call can be traced to that particular phone. And besides, where I live I haven't seen a functioning pay phone in several years, the ones I do see are abandoned and vandalized. When I think of spies using phones I think more along the lines of the 70s film Three Days of the Condor, where spies call only in emergencies.

Censoring wrong info doesn't keep people from believing it, it only reinforces it. Liberals, actual liberals, used to understand this instinctively. It's why for decades the ACLU defended neo-Nazis' right to freedom of speech, even though they couldn't be farther apart ideologically.   341.  @xszl  Well I don't know how it is in Europe, particularly in that region of Europe, but where I live in the US most people don't have SW radios, and if there is a disaster they will mostly tune into the normal AM/FM stations. SW radios are mostly for radio enthusiasts like me, and even people who have radios with SW bands often don't think about using that band. The number of strong SW stations in North America isn't very high. Maybe they are more dense in Eastern Europe?
