  1. I've gotten robo telemarketer/scam calls and often I just mute my phone and listen to waste their time. Sometimes in the background you can hear weird machinery/computer noises. I've often wondered what that was.

  2. A phone-based method of communication certainly seems less secure than using a radio broadcast, anyone who dials a number is risking detection. Even if you use a pay phone the call can be traced to that particular phone. And besides, where I live I haven't seen a functioning pay phone in several years, the ones I do see are abandoned and vandalized. When I think of spies using phones I think more along the lines of the 70s film Three Days of the Condor, where spies call only in emergencies.
