As is said near the end of this video, any one of a dozen things could've gone right and she and Noonan could've made it, but they fell through the "swiss cheese" model we hear about in modern accident reports. She was also a huge media darling, a celebrity, and therefore remembered decades later while most people don't even remember Noonan's name.

  14. I think it's a mistake to use a shiny sphere instead of a flat black metal disk. The overhead projector experiment pretty much showed you the problems the ball bearing can cause.

  15. The only way to abort a launch is to have a guy outside a few hundred yards away with a high powered rifle put a round in the turbo pumps as it clears the silo. One shot, miss, and the world dies. Of course, you have a guy for each missile silo...and that would be a boring job.

  19. Re. the quote attributed to Henry Ford concerning black cars: I visited an antique car museum and the docent told me that's a myth, then showed me about 5 Model T cars in their collection, only one of which was actually black. So not sure about that one.
