  3.  @mightyV444  That's the Rush magic, the guitar solos have lots of space in them and suddenly the bass and drums pop out even stronger. Another thing I notice is that even though Lifeson changed his gear and style over the years, there's always something about his sound that only sounds like Alex Lifeson, from the first album in 1974 to whatever he's doing today.

  5. Yes, and they were right. The chart in 78 was way better than the chart in 98. If we're talking top 40 charts here, and we are, then absolutely music today sucks. If you're talking about music in general, which you have to dig around the net to find, then music today is certainly doing fine, it's a golden age for listeners who don't mind a little searching around.

  9. It's that boosted mid range guitar tone Eddie uses. It's not necessarily the best for all rock, but it's perfect for the kind of music VH made.

  11.  @mightyV444  Yeah, he is shown with the Ric in the music video, but music videos are often not representative of the gear used on the track. Knowing the album is split between the Jazz and the Ric, if I had to guess I'd say Tom Sawyer was a Jazz tune, the bass is darker and less aggressive sounding than his Rickenbacker. In more recent years he buries the Jazz tone in overdrive and people think it sounds like the Ric but it never did to me really. If you bury a bass under enough distortion they all start to sound similar. I saw them on they're last tour and Geddy used like 15 different basses through the same stage rig, including a Ric 4001, a 4005 export model hollowbody, a 4080 doubleneck, and a bunch of Jazzes, as well as a Precision and even some Gibsons. Every one of them sounded different. But the solid body Rickenbackers were the best.

  14. How much of the Police's sophistication was due to Andy Summers? I think he is more of an old school early 70s rock guitarist, but he really seemed to stretch out in the post-punk/new wave era when he teamed up with Sting and Copeland.

  24. Really surprised one of you three didn't call out the Stratocaster. As a bass player I always thought Strats were cool and one day I got me one. I just think of all those legendary guitarists who used them, Hendrix, Buddy Holly, David Gilmour, SRV, Clapton. Even guys who aren't known for being Strat guys have used them at least occasionally, Alex Lifeson comes to mind.

  31. He used the term incorrectly. A microphonic pickup is when the glue holding the magnet and the windings together loosens up and vibrates, making the pickup act like a microphone. If you yell at it you can hear your voice through the amp. That's not a good thing and when it happens it needs to be fixed. Can cause feedback problems and stuff.

  35. Black Sabbath needs a mention here. So many of their songs change up in mid-song, usually from one bone-crushing riff to a new one. Electric Funeral, Hand of Doom, Into the Void, Fairies Wear Boots, Iron Man, the list just goes on and on and it's all awesome.

  36. Question Rick: is the guitar solo played and then reversed from end to beginning, or did Fruscianti play it forwards and then each note was reversed individually? I was kind of hoping you'd play it backwards for us. I've heard this song a million times and once again you've given me reason to really pay it more attention again.

But that fact is I am an 80s metalhead, I even own an Yngwie record from back then, and I can't name a single song off of it from memory. After I bought it I regretted it. Great guitar playing, boring songs. To make matters worse, he picked an awful singer for his band.

I doubt it, and have none of my own, other than the fact that aside from my musician friends I can't think of anyone I've ever met who's even heard of Yngwie. It's not real data, just anecdotal.

  46. Advertising has been shown to work, and work very well, for a good century and a half or so. Companies pay a ton of money for ads for a reason. The fact that I can watch youtube videos for free makes me okay with some advertising of some sort, but this is deliberately obnoxious and is aimed more at getting you to pay for YouTube Premium than it is at advertising per se.
