And once again in the thick of it is the good old B-52.

I like how the continued secrecy around the Blackbird means Kelly Johnson's legend continues.

Assuming she was dying of dehydration or exposure, there would be a time where she would fall unconscious prior to death and the crabs would not wait to start eating. Along with the utter despair she must've felt hoping and waiting for a rescue that would never come, this seems like a truly awful way to die. She'd have better off if the aircraft had hard crashed into the reef and killed them on impact.

Remember when Soviet Russia shot down a 747 full of innocent passengers and there was no war? Pepperidge Farm remembers that, too.
13
Those F-16s in that dark green camo paint job, never seen that before. Looks freakin' cool.

To quote Goose, "I hate it when it does that."

Guam is US territory. So Guam is America's back yard.

No, you may be facing the enemy in a dogfight because the rules of engagement set by politicians in Washington force you to wait until you are in visual range before shooting at enemy aircraft. They say that in war, you must always remember that the enemy gets a say in how things happen, but don't forget that so do the politicians. This is why dogfights happened so often in Vietnam, where Phantoms were usually not allowed to use their advanced radar and fire control to shoot at beyond visual range because of ROE restrictions. Phantoms and other allied pilots then found themselves in dogfights, running out of missiles in a jet with no gun. That's why 4th Gen. fighters all have guns today. Maybe you're right and history won't repeat itself, or maybe politicians with satcom capability will continue to micromanage combat decisions. Which do you think is more likely?

Grandpa B-17: "Back in my day taking out enemy fighters was par for the course."

That's as horrifying as it is funny.

@rrob692326 Even the Iowa class battleships, 80 years old and retired, are faster than their published speeds. Same with the old Essex class carriers. When the engine room kicks them in the ass they will eek out a few extra knots of speed, and the Navy was just fine not bragging about it in public.
3
Regarding the Super Tomcat, the Navy has really shot itself in the foot over the last 20 years or so. No replacement for the A-6, no true replacement for the F-14, retiring of the S-3 with zero replacement. They are building brand new Ford class carriers which are awesome, but when it comes to aircraft they sold themselves short. The F-35 will be a game changer but it can't fulfill every one of these roles by itself. As an aside, who doesn't love the Tomcat in all its glory? MiG pilots, I guess...

Wrong, she was carried in the alien mothership that later returned her, still young and healthy, to Devil's Tower, Wyoming where the aliens made contact with the US government and played a bunch of electronic music to communicate.

@SCP-POOL If there's one thing I've learned from reading Popular Mechanics over the years, is that it's full of really cool stuff you'll never see in real life.
2
Didn't the Sparrow do pretty well in the 91 Gulf War?
2
Soldiers still carry and train with bayonets, despite having rifles with ranges of several hundred yards. Fighters still need a gun for the same reason.

The F-16 is among the most beautiful airplanes ever. Just stand next to one on a flightline and look at it. It's like they brought Leonardo daVinci back to life and asked him to make a supersonic sculpture.

@willdenoble1898 Thanks for your contribution.

@Maximillian Wylde The 1980s were an amazing time, technology just kept advancing so fast and it felt like we would be able to do anything so long as the USSR didn't blow us up. Even the Challenger accident didn't stop us, only slowed us down. 30+ years later it seems like we've been spinning our wheels wasting time on smart phones and social media instead of colonizing the Solar System.

1:53 Wow check out the Alaska ANG's cool camo job on that Viper.

Sound reminiscent of "air rushing through a big tube". Well, that's basically what a jet engine is so...

The F-12, IIRC, wasn't competing with the B-70 Valkyrie, but rather the F-108 Rapier interceptor, which was being developed alongside the B-70 and used some common technology. The F-108 was going to be a Mach 3+ interceptor in a similar role as the F-12 but was also canceled. The MiG-25 is probably the most similar design to actually enter service, and it was quite limited to a small mission set. The Avro Arrow is another similar high speed interceptor that got canceled.

"We've been experimenting with using intermediary platforms like the U-2 spy plane." U-2, from the 1950s, outlives 'em all.

8:57 brings up a separate discussion and a peeve of mine: why doesn't the US Navy operate any seaplanes of any sort anymore? Or the US Coast Guard at least? The Japanese navy still has them, they are great for patrol and search and rescue missions. That has always seemed like a gap in capability.
1
@SeedOfElijah Can drones land in water and pick up survivors or carry rescue swimmers?
1
I'm interested in how one "throttles" a solid rocket motor. Also, the idiot in the USAF who ran his mouth about how this new missile will allow them to reduce the already-scarce number of F-22's should be fired for blurting that dumb idea out.
1
So who was the jackass responsible for canceling production of the F-22?
1
The concept of dropping things from orbit is problematic since it's very hard to tell that apart from a FOBS, which has treaty implications.
1
The US has always tested long range missiles in the Pacific, there is nothing new about that. And Guam is US territory, so that makes it America's backyard, not China's.
1
The Air Force removed the last tail guns from the B-52 some years ago; it was still there into the 90s at least, and in Vietnam there were, I think, two MiG kills by B-52 tail gunners. Somewhere out there is a B-52 with a MiG kill painted on the side, which is pretty badass for a jet age bomber.

Noonan wasn't a pretty young woman so he gets ignored by the media both at the time and especially today. Just an average white guy.

@Istandby666 Aliens, huh? Tell us more, bro.

@Silver_Prussian Absolutely false. In the days before GPS, they made a navigational error and strayed over Soviet airspace. The fighter pilot who intercepted the jet (KAL 007) reported that he saw the rows of windows and identified it as a civilian 747, and that she was flying with her navigation and anticollision strobe lights on, but he followed orders and killed those passengers anyway. Then the USSR lied about it and tried to cover it up. Of course you know all this and are just being a commie troll.

@robertpatrick3350 Whatever you call that deep, almost black, blue color of the SR-71 is the fastest jet color. (Also a Lockheed creation, BTW)

That business about the Chinese communists trying to recruit her is not without precedent. A few recent spy cases involved this, and then there is the case of Hsue-shen Tsien, the American rocket scientist who got marginalized during the 1950s Red Scare and went to China. A brilliant man who is now regarded as the father of the Chinese space program. That was a stupid move by the US government.

So how many soldiers in pup kink masks can it carry?
1
So this thing would've been a flying supersonic Aegis destroyer. Cool by me.
1
Ok, great, you have stealth and all that network tech and shoot missiles at targets behind you and the production jets have limitations removed. But it's still not clear to me: can the F-35 handle itself in a guns-only one on one fight with an F-16 or can't it? How about a MiG-29 or one of the fancy Flanker variants? It may be a moot point if you honestly think it'll never happen, but it's still the question we're asking, so what's the deal? (Note: my money is on the F-35 in any real fight, let's be real here.)
1
@Whiskey11Gaming Sounds just like the 60s going into Vietnam when they thought they'd never have to dogfight again. Until they did.
1
They exist because even though their military sucks, they have lots and lots of nuclear warheads, and only a fraction of them have to function.
1
A few years back Lockheed Martin demo'd the civilian version of the new C-130 at an airshow and actually did a full loop. The modern Hercs are beasts.
1
@Anonnonner9546 The Marines bought the F-35B specifically for the CAS role, because that is the primary purpose of Marine aviation. The gun on the F-35 is a 4-barrel version of the 5-barrel gun on the Harrier which is what the F-35 is replacing, and the Harrier has used its gun a fair amount in air-to-ground strafing. PGMs are expensive and scarce, cannon shells are cheap and plentiful. And if you're afraid to send your expensive jet into harm's way to protect your troops on the ground, Marine aviation is not for you.

The cool thing is that the Nighthawk started life as a black project, and now it's gone back to being a secret program. And it looks the part.

@GardenGuy1942 He flew your mom last night.
