There were a few Civil War vets at WWII victory parades. Those guys went from muzzle loaded muskets to jet fighter and nuclear weapons in their lifetimes.

@TeKnOShEeP And after the shuttle landed they were still radiating heat for a good while just sitting there on the runway.

That shot of the orbiter in space with the wing root sections popping out scared the crap out of me, I thought I was watching actual footage. If your wings ever did that in real life you are in big trouble.

Were you unable to tell your family about your work? Was it classified or proprietary?

Probably a round of drinks owed to the crew for every attempt, payable upon return to Houston.

@257shooter9 Gotcha.

I caught some transistors hanging out near my garage, looking suspicious. I think they're planning to burglarize my home.

Going straight from plasma rings to electricity is also how fusion works in the BattleTech universe. So maybe I'll get to drive around in a Marauder Battle Mech someday after all.

I've heard of this airplane since seeing it on Discovery Channel's Wings back in the 90s, and while it's famous for being dangerously loud, I didn't realize it had all these other problems with vibration and controllability. The F-84 was a great platform for experimentation and there were several variants over the years. It's now an almost forgotten fighter but it's very important in the history of aviation.

The X-15 is one of the coolest airplanes ever built. Not only did it break all those speed and altitude records, it did it while looking good.

The X-20 Dyna Soar's heat shielding also would've used liquid coolant during peak heating.

@Pravlord Not.

@ignatziusturret5641 How does that make you feel?

For spacecraft which are not one-time use devices, the dust is going to be a problem as they fly through it at high speeds on a regular basis.

When I was little I had a big die-cast metal toy P-47, probably about a 10 inch wingspan or so. I think it had retractable landing gear. That thing was awesome, and pretty heavy. Always liked this airplane.

"It took the damn spacecraft 4 days to change its velocity by 94 km/hr." I know, right? Damn slow thing! ...Oh, wait, "Dawn", he said Dawn spacecraft...nevermind.

@Rathbone_fan_account No but unfortunately, Professor Epstein did kill himself...with his new drive.
