  2. Over the last 2 decades I've traveled coast to coast by rail a few times. (all pre-pandemic of course) I love it. If you want speed it's not the thing for you; you have to make the rail trip itself part of the reason for the trip. The food is always decent, you meet some interesting people, and I like the privacy of the roomettes. One of my favorite things was the friendliness of the staff. Compared to airlines the Amtrak staff are very nice people, and talking to them some of them are proud to be railroaders. My favorite route is the California Zephyr eastbound from Oakland to Chicago. As you pass through the Rocky Mountains in the late afternoon the views are spactacular.
