  3. Kubrick managed to take a scene that is on the surface very cold and emotional and squeeze tons of emotion out of it. Such a fantastic movie.

I once saw a documentary where they interviewed former mobsters and one of them said that eating a lot was a big thing amongst the mob, maybe because of their desire for physical gratification but also the guy said he thought maybe he ate a lot to cover up his guilt for the awful things he knew he had done.

  5. Not to mention his incestuous nature and treatment of his sister and nephew. Some villains can be charismatic and be admired a bit, Tony Soprano or even Darth Vader, but guys like Gladiator version of Commodus have no redeeming features, they just utterly make your skin crawl whenever they are on screen.

  6. I was lucky, I didn't see this film when it first came out and my friends told me it was worth a look, but nobody spoiled it for me. That reveal when we see Amy is actually alive and batshit crazy was so awesome.

  8. If he had murdered those kids there would've been a huge manhunt for him and it would've been all over the locals TV news. By handling it the way he did the cops consider him just small time perp in a hit and run accident and the heat will be much less.

  10. The thing I love about that camera shot is that it is at both the beginning and end of the film, and at the beginning it's just a girl looking up at the camera, but at the end of the film it's like a demon staring into your soul. Such a great well-made film.

  11. This is alternate history Batman, where instead of being treated by Dr. Harleen Qunizel at Arkham, the Joker is sent to be treated by Ratched and loses before Batman ever meets him.

  12. Arthur is absolutely evil as well as tragic. The third man killed in the train scene was not even close to self defense, his mother was not self defense, no matter how horrible he thinks she was, Murray was an asshole but not self defense, and the therapist murder was not self defense. Even the fat guy from work he murders in his apartment was guilt of being a liar and an asshole, but that was straight up murder. Joker's mental issues and situation made it easier and more tempting to murder these people, but his failure to resist the temptation makes him evil.

  13. Tony very clearly loved Christopher but when it came down to it, he cold bloodedly killed him. Tony was capable of loving you and still deciding to kill you. It's why he was so good at running a mafia family, he could make hard, and horrifying, decisions.

  15. The problem with Dracula is that he technically isn't human anymore and hasn't been for centuries. Once you become a vampire you are a "creature". You keep your identity, in this case as a Romanian count with a large estate, and your memories and even personality, but your motivations and cravings are now driven by your supernatural (and fictional, of course) state.

  17.  @averageparasenjoyer  In some versions of the story, yes, including the Jack Nicholson film, where we find out not only who Joker is but that he killed the Waynes. I prefer these things to be left unsolved.

  21.  @korawitbuttramee618  He made some unfortunate choices and wound up in a bunch of B movies, at least one of which was a Blade Runner knockoff (I forget the name but it's watchable at least). The A movies he was in just didn't get big unfortunately. I think Hitcher is one of his better roles, a great horror/thriller flick from the 80s. One of the films he made about ten years ago that's worth checking out is "Hobo with a Shotgun", which is based on a fake movie trailer from the Grindhouse double feature of 2007. Violent as hell, of course, but fun to watch.

  22. What saved Jake was being a good guy and stopping a rape. Loved that film. If I remember correctly I saw it just after the 9/11 attacks, so it was filmed in the months leading up to it.

  23. I don't think Alonzo ever started off wanting to be a good cop. For him, being a cop put him into an advantageous position to get away with committing crime. He says it to the other cops in the diner about the perp who walked after convincing the judge he was crazy: guy played the game and came out on top, why hold it against him? Alonzo spent his whole career playing the game and getting away with whatever he could.

  25. Growing up I never took David Carradine very seriously as an actor, but he was awesome in this film. I'm happy Tarantino gave him this role and that he did this before he passed.

  28. Barnes' behavior towards his men was aimed at keeping them alive and healthy; comfort is not his business in the army. Up until he crossed the line and started murdering people he was a pretty good platoon sgt who did his job and took care of his guys. That scene where he loses two guys to a booby trap and breaks down was key, I'm pretty sure that's when he flipped his switch and went from a bastard good guy to an actual bad guy.

  32. The fact that he murdered JF Sebastian alone makes him evil. Some of the other people he killed may have had it coming, but JF was never anything but a nice guy who suffered from a similar condition as the replicants, a disease that was shortening his life span, and which probably also disqualified him as a candidate for travel to an off-world colony as well. Pris played him for a fool and he took her in off the street to give her food and shelter, and later Roy as well, and in return Roy and Pris terrorized him, forced him to gain entry to Tyrell's quarters, and then murdered him really for no reason at all. Yes, in the last minutes of his life, Roy "saw the light" so to speak and decided to stop being a murdering bastard, but a murdering bastard is exactly what he was up to that point. Guys like Roy were the reason replicants were outlawed in Los Angeles and why Blade Runners had jobs.

  34. Some movie villains are portrayed as likeable or sympathetic, but Jack's portrayal of Frank is a truly disgusting piece of human filth. It's so good because as a Jack Nicholson character you want to find him charming and roguish like so many glorified movie gangsters, but Nicholson manages to be foul and revolting at the same time.

  38. When I was in college we had this one women professor who was kind of overweight and looked a bit like Cathy Bates, and she was also kind of a bitch. My buddy started calling her Misery. "Dude, we got class with Misery in 15 minutes." Used to crack me up.

  39. I know this one is a bit obscure for many viewers, but might I suggest Sir Henry Simmerson from the Sharp's Rifles films (starring Sean Bean as the protagonist)?
