  1. If you have a low-pass filter on the output the "stairs" get smoothed almost completely away. Back in college I built a DAC from Radio Shack parts. I don't remember all the details, but I remember that.

  3. My hat's off to software guys. Especially if you have to maintain legacy code that was written by some guy years ago and you have to decipher his thinking. I feel lucky just to be a normal end user who has to write some simple stuff in Matlab or VBA once in a while.

  8. Kodak is not a camera company, though, it was primarily a film manufacturer, making tons of money off of mass produced film. So switching away from film would've been a difficult transition for the company no matter what. And as another reply said: digital at the time was impractical for consumer use, basically too far ahead of its time.

  9. I studied this stuff in college, and I must say this a great explanation of it, your motion diagrams regarding the Fourier series and aliasing were very informative. I've never gotten into the habit of arguing with audiophiles; it's rather like arguing with flat earthers or other such nuts who refuse to listen to logic, but it's good to be able to explain this stuff to those who are willing.

"More art than science...that's gonna cause me some grief" --- Ansel Adams was famous for collecting lots of data and reducing his shooting, development, and printing work to a "science" which, if you follow his instructions, should always produce a perfect image. His work speaks for itself; his philosophy was not to try to make "art" the way a painter would, but to use the camera to do what no painter can: produce pin sharp images. Hence his school of photography was known as the "f/64 Club". Adams books are good texts to study to figure out the "best" way to do it, and then you are armed with the knowledge to start mucking with chemicals and times to create something more artistic and personal, figuring which of Adams' rules to break and which ones to follow.

  17.  @TechnologyConnections  "Radiated audio" is what you get from a speaker. A radio transmitter is actually generating electromagnetic radiation, modulated by some sort of intelligence. That intelligence is usually audio, in the case of your favorite music station or your walkie talkie, but it can also be data. But what comes out of, or gets picked up by, an antenna is radiation. It's non-ionizing radiation, so it won't hurt you, despite the word "radiation" which scares people.

  18.  @dielaughing73  Back in the 70s my parents bought a Chevy Impala which happened to have an oil pan heater, something meant for northern market but somehow wound up at my dad's dealer. You used an extension cord to warm up the oil pan in extreme cold so that the engine would start. I don't know if they still offer that on any vehicles these days, and of course, we didn't live far enough north to ever use it as far as I recall. Knowing my dad, he probably plugged it in at least once just out of curiosity.

  22.  @left4twenty  My older mechanical cameras don't have any light sensors, and if you know what you're doing you can estimate light levels based on experience. Maybe your cute little emoji will help.

To answer your question, there are ways to do photochemistry from chemicals available at drug stores and hardware shops, and a few different books to tell you how to do it. There were no commercial chemicals available in the 1840s when photography was invented, of course. The harder thing is what to do if they quit making film stock. At that point, you can go to a large format camera and make your own sensitized medium, again 1840s style. I have built my own 4" x 5" camera just to explore primitive photography.

  27.  @will9357  What Will 93 said. Film isn't going away completely; but it had to struggle with going from the professional mass-production market to the art photography market. It's gotten a bit more expensive and with the shutdown of so many labs you have to have your own dark room in many cases, but it's doable if you're into it.

  32. Once I was with a friend outside at night and I pointed out the moon and the planet Venus, and then I told him where the sun would be below the horizon. When he asked me how I figured that out I went into a long explanation of the plane of the ecliptic and also how you can find the sun by looking at the phase of the moon etc.

  40. I was talking to someone about how much I love my vinyl collection. He said, "I love vinyl, too. It just sounds better than digital!". I told I liked vinyl because of the cover art and cool old equipment, but I'm an engineer and CDs, properly mastered, will always beat vinyl for reproduced sound. He got all aggro with me and told me I didn't know what I was talking about. Whatevs.

  41. 19:09 I have a bad feeling that that dog is probably dead and taxidermized, since I can't imagine a dog well-trained enough to sit still for a slow speed photograph. Even with a high speed modern film or digital it's hard to take photos of pets.
