  1. You could go on further about how the Pennsy was innovative with its locomotive designs and other engineering developments. Their shops at Altoona (which are now owned by Norfolk Southern) used to have a laboratory for internal corporate R&D, kind of like a railroad version of Bell Labs. Also, the Northeast Corridor, which links DC all the way to Boston by high speed electric rail, was built by the Pennsy at their own expense in the 1930s, and now Amtrak sees heavy passenger traffic on it today.

  2. Years ago I was at the Franklin Institute science museum in Philadelphia and there were two acoustic mirrors on opposite sides of a large exhibit hall, aimed at each other. I stood at the focus of one and my brother stood at the other, and we were able to carry on a conversation with each other across the room even with loud people and kids walking between us. I don't know if it's still there but it was pretty cool.

  7. I saw Cape Hatteras LH in the early 90s and I remember how close to the water it was. Came back a few years later and it was weird to see it in a different location. I think there was a whole Discovery Channel documentary on how they moved it, really fascinating engineer work.

  11.  @richardcooke9948 Exactly. Steam is great for long haul trains but for a downtown commuter or subway system, electric is the way to go and was adopted as soon as it was practical. New York City banned steam locomotives in Manhattan very early, which is why the Northeast Corridor is electrified to this day, since it was built in the 30s by the Pennsylvania Railroad.

  12. South Jersey had the WIldwood boardwalk. Some of those rides were kind of sketchy back in the 80s too. Tons of videogame arcades though, lots of fun.

  25. In the pre-internet days it seemed like only people who grew up in the area had ever heard of the Jersey Devil, and even today it's still not very well-known outside of New Jersey. Even people in Philadelphia or New York, literally a 5 minutes drive from NJ, have often never heard of it. Back when they named the hockey team the New Jersey Devils, most people around the country just thought it was a cool name, but people who grew up in NJ knew why that name was picked.

  28. At least one early subway system consisted of cylindrical cars in a round tube tunnel driven by air pressure. Also there was the 1980s toy Micronauts Rocket Tubes, which was a pneumatic driven toy "train" set. What Elon Musk wanted is notable for the great speed at which it would operate; the entire system must be kept in a near vacuum which is a major engineering challenge.

  47. I can't understand why companies with the right to use the word "Bell" in their name don't do it. "Verizon" is such a stupid word, almost sounds like a drug brand name. Bell Telephone is a very old brand name that still carries a lot of weight, if for nothing else its association with the man who invented the telephone, and that blue bell logo is also very iconic. It was on the side of every phone booth Clark Kent ducked into.

  48. The oil was to prevent arcing when a switch is open or closed. Arcing can weld the switch contacts together, and at a minimum it will erode the contacts. There's nothing particularly terrifying about this, at least not any more terrifying than modern high voltage equipment is. IIRC though, the oil contained lots of dioxins which were later linked to cancer for people who spent time in contact with it.
