I think the fact that there was a discrepancy between his dead reckoning and the navigation beacons should have alerted him to the fact that there was a possible problem. And, like squadron 12, he should have slowed down to assess the situation. The fact that he dismissed the beacons information because he believed it was unproven technology was, I believe, the wrong decision. For one thing he could have provided useful information to help prove that either the technology worked or that it needed further work. As it turned out it did work and men died because of poor decision making.

@iatsd What hind sight. This is what the 12 squadron did. And Drach did ask us to give our own thoughts which is what I did. Maybe instead of trying to rush to you 'smart' retort you should have listened to what he asked.

@bluemountain4181 This is true. In fact I was thinking how we accept new technology rather more readily then in the past. British troops in the First Gulf War were told not to rely on GPS but that is exactly what they dd. Travelling at high speed in fog when you are using dead reckoning is never a good idea.

@BobSmith-dk8nw I think Tora Tora Tora is an excellent film. Closer to a drama documentary then a movie. You would have thought with all that was going on in the rest of the world they would have at least had a more, as you observed, 'ready to go' attitude. It looks more like they believed that the war would never happen to them. Having said that once they got themselves into gear the US armed forces made a good job of it.

@smokey1255 A sky full of USAAF fighters as well as flak. Now that is what I call a surprise. As many, if not all of the battleships et cetera would have survived they could meet up with the carriers and go after the Japanese fleet. I imagine the war would have been much shorter.
