Interesting about pre WW1 colour schemes. Prior to WW1 the Great Eastern Railway, which covered East Anglia, painted its passenger locomotives royal blue. But when war broke out this colour was no longer available because it was being used by the Royal Navy. So all locomotive were painted what could be described as battleship grey. You would have thought that is the colour the navy would have used to camouflage their ships but no. Having said that there is no record of a German warship firing on an Great Eastern locomotive, so as a camouflage scheme it did work.

Interesting what you mentioned about tank rounds and why they would be less effective on battleships. I had recently wondered about them and I did think the would be less effective then on a tank. So thanks for confirming that. I note that shaped charges are used on torpedoes but as these would strike a ship below the waterline I assume there main effect was flooding rather then destruction and the purpose of the shaped charge was to punch a hole in the ship.

@Drachinifel I would have though the effects of a HESH round on armour would have been devastating on a warship. What with all the splinters from the shattered armour. But as you say unless it hits something vital then its damage would be absorbed by the ship.
