Your mention of the congressman who had one son fighting for the north and one for the south. This reminded me of two brothers who were fighting in a Confederate infantry regiment. One of the brothers suddenly called out for the other brother to stop shooting as he had just realised that the Union regiment they were fighting was the one their father was in. I also remember reading of a naval battle during the civil war in which the confederate ship surrendered. One of the Union officers quickly jumped aboard the confederate ship looking for his brother only to find him dying of his wounds. What made it worse was that the Union officer was the ships doctor, but even so he could not save his brothers life. Civil war. Brother against brother, father against sons.
