During the Battle of France in 1940 the French had decided not to use their radios because he Germans could pick up the signal from the radio and bomb the radio. So a motorcycle dispatch rider would be sent back from the battlefield to the headquarters just outside of Paris. All to often the general in command of the French Army would not be at his headquarters but at a little hunting lodge some five miles away. By the time the dispatcher rider had returned to the combat area it was three days later and the situation had totally changed. The French soldiers fought well but, as you say, they were poorly led.
