  1. Nature showing what it can do. Your story reminded me of a documentary I watched some years ago. It was set just before Christmas, I believe the year was 1908, and it was unseasonably mild. It was the last day of school for the children of the West Country village and because it was so mild the children had an extended playtime. The headmaster of the school saw some rather ominous clouds in the distance and decided to send the children home before the bad weather hit them. Well winter was late but decided to make up for it and it snow heavily. The following morning a farmworkers was woken by his children and as it was still dark he sent them back to bed. After a short while he woke up again and realised something was wrong. When he opened his front door all he could see was a solid wall of snow. When he finally dug his way out the snow was banked up all the way to the roof top. For those note from the UK this is not normal. As you would expect this caused widespread disruption to people's lives, especially to the rural areas, as in your story. In June the following year a number of farm labourers came back to the this village from up on Bodmin Moor, which is some distance away, and one of them was carrying the remains of a large piece of ice left over from them winter blizzard.
