  1. I vaguely knew about this event but I had no idea of the full story. So thank you for adding the details. It is somewhat ironic that Patton's only involvement here was to let the mission go ahead when he was so involved in the attempted rescue his son-in-law which not only failed but cost American lives. It is also ironic that Germany, known for its armoured Blitzkrieg, was so heavily dependent on horses. And they were taking steps to introduce a breeding programme at a time when the British were looking to go fully mechanised. Indivative of their wrongheaded muddled thinking.
