  3.  @jgates63  No he was there but trapped in one of the aircraft where the fire was. I think the aircraft which fired the missile was an F4 Phantom.

  5. That is an interesting incident for several reason. Firstly it looks like all the firefighting training and procedures the USN had mastered in WW2 seem to have been lost. Secondly it was a lapse in safety procedures which set up the missile from the F4 being launched. Thirdly sending out poor quality and out of date munitions in the form of the bombs they were supplied with added to the disaster. Also why did none of the navy pilots trapped in their aircraft on the flight deck simply eject. At least one pilot lost his life while trapped inside his A4.

  6.  @jamesrather7170  I know it used to be that powered ships had to give way to sailing ship. But I cannot see one of the big carriers getting out of the way of a little sailing ship.
