  2. We all think of the battleship and what an important part it has played in naval history. But when you realise that HMS Dreadnought, the first true battleship, went into service in 1906 and the last battleship, HMS Vanguard, entered service in 1946, you realise what an impact they made to 20th century naval warfare in just their few short years. Interestingly the seeds of the battleships demise were sown in 1914 with HMS Ark Royal. The first ship in history designed and built as a seaplane carrier. In 1918, HMS Argus became the world's first carrier capable of launching and recovering naval aircraft.
