It's a shame the painting no longer exists as it would have been something worth seeing. Interestingly we have something similar such as the Bronze Age Uffington White Horse and the Cerne Abbas Giant. The in the case of the Cerne Abbas Giant, a 180 foot (55 metre) nude man seems to date from the 17th century. In these cases the hill figures were made by removing the grass to expose the chalk underneath rather then painting on them. The reason for their existence is unknown but many look to have been territorial makers. There are some more modern and temporary examples such as Homer Simpson carrying a giant donut was made for the Simpsons Movie. Also a cartoon version of the then British Prime Minister John Major, depicted like Superman with his underwear on the outside, also appeared briefly. The middle of the 13th century saw a drop in world wide temperatures which meant that summers were colder and wetter. So a society which was reliant on agricultural would see crops suffering from damp, causing fungus to grow on their crops, and the lack of sunshine meant that crops did not ripen. This, in turn, would have caused famine and was probably one of the reasons the local culture to disappear.
