I got one as well. When I was 14 I got the usual booster jab. When the nurse took hold of my arm and I flinch and called out ouch. I've not injected you yet. she exclaimed. I know, I replied. But your hands are bloody cold.

LagiNaLangAko23 No. I think that one covered three different vaccines in one go.

In the UK polio vaccination was introduced in the mid 1950s, and I was born after its launch. I had heard of people catching it and the Iron Lung used to help people breath but by the time I had an understanding of its existence death from polio was something in the past.

Once again we see how great discoveries do not come from one person but from many. I hope you do a follow up to this to include Edward Jenner, as he is often called a pioneer of immunisation. Using a method valid in immunology before the discovery of germ theory, his work saved many lives. The terms vaccine and vaccination are derived, as you mentioned, from Variolae vaccinae (smallpox of the cow), the term devised by Jenner to denote cowpox. It had long been noted that milk maids did not catch smallpox have already had cowpox. So Jenner used cowpox to immunise people against the related smallpox. In Jenner's time, smallpox killed around 10% of the British population, with the number as high as 20% in towns and cities where infection spread more easily. So it is easy to see how important his discovery was.
