i seem to remember that one of the problems with Dien Bien Phu was that many of the aircraft earmarked to support the French troops there were taken way for another mission. So it never got the support of ground attack aircraft it needed to make it successful. I seem to remember reading that just after WW2 when Vietnam was briefly held by the British they had a clash with the Viet Min. The British had to rearm Japanese troops and use them to help fight the Viet Min. I think this was against the Geneva Convention, but German soldiers were being used to clear landmines in Europe I do not think the Allies were to worried about that.
