Here in Britain we also have lost many of our apple varieties. In the 18th century there were villages where each orchard had a different variety of apple. And that could be forty or fifty orchard per village. Though not as many as America it is a pity so few have survived. Many of our reasons for losing them are similar to those of America, though we did not have Prohibition. Having said that we still have many apple orchards around the country growing different varieties of cider apple.
