The recovery of the wreck brought a new innovation. The archaeologist diving on the wreck would have to surface in order to talk to each other, this is in the days before divers could use radios. So they would surface, discuss any ideas or problems they had encountered et cetera and then dive down again back to the wreck. To get around this they had something like a miniature diving bell which was near the wreck and which big enough for three or four people to get their heads inside. That way they could pop their heads inside, talk to each other then back to the wreck. I believe it was called the telephone box, or something similar.
