This is true but often the name was given to anyone who had even the most modest of ability to write. Oddly enough many people in the Medieval period had a very good grasp of the workings of the law, especially as it related to their work such as farming. This, despite, not being able to read. The law would be explained to them, especially if they had infringed it, and they would then in turn explain it to others.

I have heard of James Clerk Maxwell and I did know of his achievements. But, as always, it is enjoyable to hear your retelling of his life and its accomplishments. You have to wonder how much more he would have achieved if his life span had been longer.

In ancient Rome all men shaved. The two problems were that they were dryshaved, i.e. no water and shaving soap. And the blades were not at all sharp. So they were not so much shaved as scraped. One Roman claimed that after coming out of the barbers he looked more like a gladiator fresh from the arena. I believe one of the reason the emperor Hadrian was so popular was that he had been a general in the army and that it was the fashion for those in the legions to grow beards. Having said that you have to think that he was less popular with barbers.
